A fortress rebuilt over centuries

The citadel is locally known as Qala Ikhtiyaruddin. Fortifications have occupied this area for many centuries, and the structure visible today carries evidence of repeated rebuilding under different rulers.

Herat prospered as a centre of learning, miniature painting, calligraphy and architecture, especially during the Timurid period in the 15th century. The fortress guarded a city positioned on major routes between Iran, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent.

Preserving the city’s memory

Restoration has helped stabilize walls and towers that survived conflict, neglect and environmental damage. The citadel has also housed cultural collections, connecting the monument with the broader story of Herat.
